Just beneath the stylish walkways of Miyashita Park, there’s a completely different world waiting for you: the world of Shibuya Yokocho. It’s loud, smoky, full of sizzling skewers and clinking beer glasses — a carefully curated nostalgic alleyway of Japan’s Showa era, hidden in plain sight.

Whether you’re a foodie, a curious traveler, or just hungry for something authentic, Shibuya Yokocho is a must-stop in modern Tokyo.

🏮 What Is a Yokocho?

The word “yokocho” literally means “side alley.” Traditionally, it referred to the narrow streets behind train stations, packed with tiny izakayas (Japanese pubs), ramen joints, yakitori stands, and noisy salarymen letting off steam.

Shibuya Yokocho recreates this vibe — but under one roof.

🏯 A Modern Take on an Old-School Idea

Opened in 2020, Shibuya Yokocho is located inside the RAYARD Miyashita Park complex, on the 1st floor, just steps from luxury shops and rooftop greenery.

But walk into the yokocho, and the mood changes instantly:

  • Retro lanterns & handwritten menus

  • Plastic stools & low tables

  • Grill smoke, laughter, and music from every region of Japan

The concept? 19 different food stalls, each representing a different part of Japan — from Hokkaido seafood to Okinawan soul food.

🍢 What to Eat & Drink

You could spend an entire evening eating your way through the country without leaving your chair. Some popular stops:

  • Hokkaido-style crab & seafood

  • Osaka kushikatsu (fried skewers with dipping sauce)

  • Kyushu-style motsunabe (beef tripe hotpot)

  • Okinawan taco rice & Umi Budo (Sea grapes)

  • Japanese craft beer & sake bars

The atmosphere is lively, and most places offer English menus. It’s a great place to be adventurous and try regional specialties you won’t find elsewhere in Tokyo.

💬 Why It’s Special

While other yokocho in Tokyo (like Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku or Nonbei Yokocho in Shibuya) are authentic but cramped or intimidating, Shibuya Yokocho is beginner-friendly:

  • Modern bathrooms ✅

  • Plenty of seating ✅

  • Well-lit & clean ✅

  • Welcoming to tourists ✅

  • Staff used to foreigners ✅

That said, it still retains the lively, no-frills, after-work atmosphere that makes yokocho dining so uniquely Japanese.

📍 How to Get There

  • Location: 1st floor of Miyashita Park (near Nike Store)

  • Access: 3-minute walk from Shibuya Station, Hachiko Exit

  • Hours: Varies by vendor, but most are open from 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM

  • Good to know: Some places require ordering a small drink or food item to stay seated
